GEORGE BARBIER 1882-1932 - The Birth of Art Deco. Open through 5 January 2009
GEORGE BARBIER 1882-1932.
The Birth of Art Deco. Open through 5 January 2009.
First ever exhibition dedicated to the illustrator, decorator, theater costume and fashion designer, and famous exponent of French Art Deco. Over two hundred
works, including paintings, drawings, articles, pochoir, photographs, books, manuscripts and films – coming from the rich collections of Palazzo Mocenigo (Center
for the Study of the History of Fabrics and Costumes), Musée des Arts Décoratifs of Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Musée des Beaux Arts of Nantes, and
French and Italian private collections – offer multiple aspects of the artist’s extraordinary creativity.
The show, on view in a number of thematic sections, begins with the artist’s early works and continues with a section dedicated to theater and film, offering
costume designs and screenplays; then to a rich and spectacular section dedicated to fashion illustration; and to others offering most refined illustrations of
albums, almanacs and books in precious limited editions. Most intriguing, finally, is the section dedicated to advertising work. Accompanied by a display of period
costumes from the Pezzato Collection, the exhibition is a perfect fit for the halls of the Fortuny Museum.
Curator, Barbara Martorelli. Catalogue, Marsilio.
