Venice Carnival 2011: what to expect

The Venice carnival is the most famous carnival in Europe and a number of factors add to the glamor of this carnival including the beautiful city of Venice, the fantastic street music, the splendid Italian food and the festive atmosphere.

This carnival has become one of the most anticipated festivals and holiday attractions of Italy and the Europe as a whole and this year this extravagance is going to happen from February 26 to March 8 2011.

What to expect?

All of you can expect one of the biggest festive atmosphere you have seen in your entire lifetime during each day of the carnival. You will find yourself in an ocean of masked mob who will literally hijack the entire streets of Venice.

The most salient feature of Venice Carnival is the elaborate use of masks. You may find all the different varieties of masks you can imagine. The masks are of different types and shapes sprinkled with eye catching colours and designs. During the festival the streets and the public places of Venice are literally taken over by masks giving a look of fantasy world. The most widely used type of mask , for which Venetians would spend absolute fortunes, is the ‘bauta‘, it was an ample full-cut black mantle which dropped over the shoulders down to the waist. On their heads they wore the typical black, three cornered hat, and on their faces a white mask called ‘larva‘, with a widened, protruding lip that altered their voices. The bauta was used by both men and women with black color being the most popular one.

Four routes will be organized across Venice enlivened by performers from all corners of the globe. Visitors be able to stroll through the city in a magical atmosphere and take part “Great Carnival Game”, in the hope of winning the attractive first prize, enjoying themselves at the same time. As well as the entertainment in St. Mark’s Square, the Venetian Carnival is also famous for its concerts, which are held in the various churches of the city, for the theatrical performances, in the great Venetian tradition, and above all, for the magnificent festivals and balls, all taking take place in the unique setting of some of the ancient Venetian Palaces.
